A Harvest Song

This is another tuneful solo by A.D. Cammeyer, similar in style to ‘A Sonnet’, but rather more demanding from a fingering point of view.  Cammeyer had big hands, and could manage long stretches over the fingerboard with ease, so players with small hands may find some of the chords difficult to obtain cleanly.   For that reason, alternative fingerings have been suggested, so that all players will be able to play and enjoy this solo.

As with most of Cammeyer’s pieces, the fourth string is tuned to D, and there are some unusual chords, which are suspensions resolving on a later chord.  There is also a passage where, in a series of chords, the melody is played on inside strings, and so needs to accentuated carefully.  The melody is simple, but there is much scope for a musicianly performance, so it is a very satisfying solo for the thoughtful player.
