A Darkie Chuckle
A DARKIE CHUCKLE
Although it is clear from the title that this is one of Morley’s earlier pieces, it is certainly one of the most tuneful although, like so many, it can suffer from too many repetitions. This is noticeable on the George Morris recording where, apart from the Introduction which is marked Andante, he plays the piece at a tremendous speed and has to introduce two extra unmarked repeats to make up the playing time.
Even the most dedicated banjoist can become a little bored with constant repetition, but amateurs don’t have to play all the repeats, (and certainly not prestissimo), so they, and any listeners will be sure to derive a great deal of enjoyment from this classic Morley solo. The sample mp3 excerpt is a recent live recording.
