The Palladium March
THE PALLADIUM MARCH
The title of this solo reminds us of the Christmas revival of the Minstrel Show at the London Palladium in 1912. The Banjo Team, which consisted of thirty-four banjoists was under the leadership of Joe Morley, and played such pieces as ‘A Banjo Oddity’. This solo is a little more difficult, and was probably played by Morley himself, who featured as the star soloist, and delighted the packed audiences with a rendering of ‘El Contrabandista’, among other titles. This March is written in a foot-tapping six-eight time, and no doubt had the banjoists among the audience keen to buy it and learn to play it for themselves. During performance it would have been discreetly accompanied by the pit orchestra, and there are a few bars originally allocated to the piano, which have been arranged so that the soloist can play them without losing the rhythm of the piece.
