Spanish Dance
SPANISH DANCE
It may be more usual to hear a Spanish dance played on a guitar, but this one sounds very well on the banjo, because, perhaps, it is in a natural key for that instrument, — C minor.
The piece includes an interesting effect involving controlled ritardo, where instead of the more familiar rasgueado, a very quiet arpeggio is played using the back of a single fingernail.
There is plenty of more robust playing using typical Spanish rhythms and chord sequences, ending with a true rasgueado, although it is marked by the banjo term ‘Rasp’.
This is not a simple piece, but stands out from the ordinary kind of banjo solo, and is very satisfying to play.
