SOMETHING DOING

Scott Hayden was one of the young players who learnt much from Scott Joplin, who was some fourteen years older, a studious man and a natural teacher.   They collaborated on four titles, and most music authorities agree that while they are mainly Hayden’s work, it is likely that Joplin contributed a complete section, such as a Trio to them.   This piece was published in 1903, and is a typical rag of the period, containing some good tunes which sound well on the banjo.   The piano idiom does not transfer easily onto a fingerboard, but attention should be given to the instruction which appears on many of Scott Joplin’s solos: ‘Not fast.   Ragtime should never be played fast’.

With that in mind, and the use of the suggested fingering, the average banjoist should derive a great deal of satisfaction from playing this solo, and improving his technique at the same time.
