ROSE  LEAVES

This is one of Morley’s quiet solos, and a favourite of many players.    Written in the same style as ‘Pompadour’, it is sub-titled Gavotte, and consists of four sections in the keys of F and B flat major.   Many of Morley’s solos were published without any dynamics but there are three on the original printed copy of this piece, ranging from pp to mf.   Unfortunately there does not seem to be any musical plan to their positioning, and for that reason they have been omitted, so that players will have the opportunity to explore the dynamic possibilities of the piece and create their own musical performance.   For example, there is a section played entirely on the fourth string which could be made to sound like a cello solo, if played with some tasteful vibrato.   This is an easy solo, technically, but it offers enormous scope for the musically minded banjoist.
