PUSSYFOOT PARADE

This is one of Morley’s finest compositions, with a memorable third movement melody on the fourth and third strings.    Although it was not published during Morley’s lifetime, a version of it appeared in the B.M.G. magazine in the 1940’s, and it was played about that time by the Kentucky Banjo Team in one of their BBC radio broadcasts.   According to the O.U. Dictionary, the word ‘pussyfoot’ derives from an American prohibitionist lecturer, W.E. Johnson, who was given the nickname on account of his stealthy courtroom methods when a magistrate.  Because of this association of Johnson the pussyfooting magistrate with his prominence as a prohibitionist, anyone who supported the prohibition of alcohol was called a ‘pussyfoot’.   It is unlikely that Morley knew these facts, but the name makes an attractive and alliterative title for a first class banjo solo.
