La Plus Belle Polka
LA PLUS BELLE POLKA
This is one of the solos published from Morley’s home address in Burnthwaite Road, Fulham.
There is no indication of the date, but it has been suggested that it was about the time when Clifford Essex and Cammeyer dissolved their partnership (1900), and Essex avoided a legal restriction by making it seem as if Morley was doing the publishing. This may be true, but the question still arises as to exactly when Morley wrote this solo. It was probably before 1900, and possibly even before he joined the Clifford Essex Pierrots in 1896.
The fact remains that this is not typical of the simple, easy solos of the minstrel era, although it is a polka, — one of the favourite forms for a banjo solo at that time, — but it is the kind of piece which gave Morley the nickname of ‘The Lightning Banjoist’. It is written in the keys of G, D, and C major, with the fourth string tuned to D and, even if you are not a lightning banjoist, you could derive a great deal of pleasure from playing one of Morley’s early successes.
