Gigue

GIGUE

This is the fifth piece in the 18th Century Suite for Banjo, and follows the chord structure of the others.   There are ritenutos and rallentandos to be observed, which can be very effective, but the whole solo should be played brightly, as befits a dance which, after all, was developed from the rustic ‘jig’.  The gigue was first introduced as part of a group of contrasting dances about the mid-seventeenth century, and it continued to be used by most Continental composers well into the following one.

Played at the stated tempo, this modern example should last just over a minute, and would give a reasonably adept banjoist an interesting and unusual solo to add to his or her repertoire.
