Fun in the Cotton Field
FUN IN THE COTTON FIELD
To begin with, ignore the title, which is very dated, and think that Morley could just as easily have called this piece ‘Fun in the Cornfield’ or even ‘Haymaker’s Holiday’. It appeared in the January 1905 issue of ‘BMG’ and has a suggestion of ragtime in parts. The Trio is a fine march, with the melody on the fourth string, and some of the accompanying chords played well up on the higher frets. Few composers in those days would have had the courage to write a melody note on the fourth string at the 14th fret!
It must have amazed the amateurs of that time when Morley played it, — shifting up and down the fingerboard with his usual accuracy, and probably much faster than the tempo suggested here.
