Desert Trail
DESERT TRAIL
Published in 1933, this is one of the last Morley solos to be offered to the public and, like Monkitrix which was published the year before, is one of the best. The key is mainly C minor, with a fine fourth string solo in A flat major, and it is one of the few Morley solos with a metronome indication— a crotchet to 108—which you may think is too fast for a camel train plodding over the dunes.
The original has the final dynamics marked accelerando e crescendo with the last two chords played forte, as if the camels have sighted an oasis and are making a dash for it, but I have taken the liberty of changing the last eight bars to a gradual diminuendo and suggested that the last two chords should be played as quietly as possible, because I imagine the camel train disappearing in the distance. You, as the performer, can change the dynamics and tempi to suit yourself, but whatever you decide, you should enjoy playing this solo.
