Black Pearl
BLACK PEARL
Before the First World War many Banjo concerts were staged all over the United Kingdom, and among them, John Alvey Turner’s London ‘Smoking Concerts’, regularly attracted large and enthusiastic audiences of amateur players. Joe Morley appeared at many of them, and this piece, ‘Black Pearl’ was played by the Joe Morley Banjo Club in November 1913, so we have some idea of the date when it was composed. In the same concert Morley played the difficult ‘El Contrabandista’ as a solo, but ‘Black Pearl’, written in the keys of C and F major, has some typical attractive Morley melodies and is well within the capabilities of the average banjoist.
