Banjoviality
BANJOVIALITY
The Banjo is generally thought of as a ‘happy’ instrument and, for some of his pieces, Morley used titles which reflect that aspect, such as ‘Jollity’, ‘Banjollity’, ‘The Jovial Huntsman’ and, for this virtually unknown solo: ‘Banjoviality’. I say ‘virtually unknown’ because it has never been published in ‘BMG’, or any similar magazine, and the manuscript used for this publication is not in Morley’s hand, but was written by J. McNaughten, who possessed a number of original Morley MSS, and presumably made this copy from one in his collection.
It seems to be an accurate copy of a Morley solo, bearing typical fingering for both right and left hands, and is in the same style as ‘Freckles’ or ‘Café au Lait’. It is easy, tuneful, and well worth playing.
