There is little in the music to indicate why Oscar Chilton should choose this title except, perhaps, a certain lightness imparted by the dotted quavers and semiquavers followed by triplet runs, but he could have been thinking of tight-rope walkers and trapeze artistes who are known as ‘aerialists’.  The piece could certainly be used effectively as a circus band accompaniment to a trapeze display, so you are advised to play it lightly, and not as if the performing elephants were in the ring!  Also, it should be played at a fairly fast tempo, — about a crotchet to 136, if possible, — but it will require careful practice to achieve that, because there are several different ways of fingering some of the passages. One method is shown, with an alternative using the third finger of your right hand in some bars, but you should experiment with others.

There are three tuneful sections, the first and third in C major, and the middle one in A minor.
