A Banjo Frolic
A BANJO FROLIC
This is one of the later publications by John Alvey Turner, — number 886 in their catalogue, although that probably doesn’t mean that it was one of Morley’s late compositions, because Zarana, at number 868, was dated 1923, and Desert Trail, number 902, has a copyright date of 1933. It seems clear that many of Morley’s compositions stayed on the publisher’s shelves for some time, — even some years, before they were printed.
This was mainly because by the late 1920’s the banjo had passed it’s heyday, and sales of new solos would not cover the cost of engraving and printing them. Fortunately, these days there are alternative and easier methods of publishing banjo music, and so players will be able to enjoy playing this typical lively Morley solo. It uses the keys of C minor, E flat major, and A flat major, which are all ‘natural’ keys on the banjo, and is certainly well worth playing.
