Clifford Essex Banjo Tone Enhancer/Clamp Mute
For 4 and 5 String Banjos
Loosen the finger screw and position the mute anywhere between the tailpiece and bridge until you achieve your favourite tone. Each position you choose will produce a different tone.
Place the mute over the bridge and the banjo is considerably muted.
The length of the steel barrel underneath the strings is 49 mm for 5 string banjos and 44 mm for 4 string banjos. Hence, if the distance between the 1st and 5th string bridge slots is less than 49mm on a 5-string, and the distance between the 1st and 4th on a 4-string is less than 43mm, then the clamp mute will work on your banjo. Check your spacing before ordering.

Product Details
Between finger and thumb hold the round barrel under the strings between the bridge and tailpiece. Place the wider top part over the strings then line up the 2 holes. Insert the finger screw and tighten. Finger tight will be sufficient because you do not want it too tight. Experiment with the mute placing it in different positions until you produce your favourite tone. If you place the side of the mute directly over the bridge, it will considerably mute the banjo.
